Special Interest Groups

There are between thirty and forty Groups meeting regularly, each led by a Group Co-ordinator, usually in members' houses or local halls. We are always keen to expand our range of interests and invite members to suggest and set up new Groups. At present these are the topics we cover:


THE ARTS

Art: meets in a local hall for two hours, three times a month, when members follow a course of painting, drawing and pastels under the guidance of an experienced amateur artist.
Music: meets once a month to listen to and discuss music.
Reading:
there are two Groups meeting monthly to select and then read a book for discussion.
Photography:
there are two Groups meeting monthly to plan topics for all to photograph for review and discussion at the next meeting. A third group meets weekly to learn Photoshop CS to enable them to manipulate their photographs and also carry out photographic projects to enable them to learn to use their digital cameras
Guitar: a new group currently being considered

Languages

French conversation: Two groups, a new group for beginners and a group for the more advanced French speaker
Latin: meeting fortnightly for basic Latin.
German:

History

History: the Group studies world history, meeting monthly under the guidance of a well-known local historian.
Local History:
 meet monthly at the Andover museum.
The History of Art: a new group recently started
 

Practical

Crafts: it is hoped to start this group up again from October onwards.
Gardening:
guided tours of Gardens, with the Gardner or Plants man. Visiting gardens not usually open to the public. Plant swapping and knowledge sharing.
Flower Arranging: this Group now meets monthly at the Burghclere Hall

SPECIALIST SUBJECTS


Genealogy:
a monthly meeting is held to exchange news, views, ideas and helpful suggestions on this fascinating topic. There are occasional visits to such sources as the National Archive at Kew.
Read Out Loud:
this new group records readings for visually impaired people
Theatre group: Another recently formed group which will hopefully visit both local and further away theatres.
Handywoman: This recently formed group aims to show our lady members how to do various tasks like changing a plug.

Games

Bridge: the Group meet weekly, except in August, to play in the comfort and relaxed atmosphere of members homes.
Mah-jong:
a new group recently started. (Pocket Oxford University dictionary spelling)

Activity Groups

Nature: once a month, on differing days of the week, this Group sets off to study nature in all its aspects from seashore to down land, forest to nature reserves.
Strollers:
there are two Groups offering walks up to 3 miles, each meets twice a month, designed for those who prefer a gentler way to keep fit – finishing with a pub lunch.
Walking:
 there are two Groups each organising 5 to 6 mile walks within about 15 mile radius of Andover, which enable one to walk each week, finishing with a pub lunch.
Weekend Walking Group:
this currently meets once a month, usually on a Saturday, walking 5 to 7 miles.

Quester:
there are three Groups devoted to finding places to visit not easily accessed, nor normally open to the public. These visits are irregular but frequent.
Exploring the Villages around Andover: This group visits local villages usually with a local guide

SOCIAL GROUPS

Sunday Lunch Group: This group will meet monthly, visiting pubs and restaurants chosen by group members to have a friendly chat together.
Coffee morning: This new venture is held in a local restaurant. All members welcome.
